Chapter 16

Rebecca

“That should be all.” I closed the trunk, careful not to crush the wedding flower arrangements Vonda and I had just loaded into my car. “I’ll see you here tomorrow morning before the ceremony.”

“Great, thank you so much.” Vonda hugged me, and the scent of sunshine and hair dye—the well-known secret behind her platinum-blonde hair—enveloped me. “I’ll be here at ten. That will give us enough time to get the food and decorations ready. See you then. Good night!”

“Good night!” I waved at Vonda and got into my car.

Dear Lord, this heat, even now at eight o’clock in the evening! I placed the key in the ignition and turned it, yearning to feel the draft from the air vent.

A click sounded from somewhere inside the dashboard.

I turned the key again. Click-click.

Vonda stopped and lifted her eyebrows at me. For the third time, I turned the key. Not even a rusty hiccup from the motor.

I shook my head through the windshield, and she came back and opened my driver’s door. “Is the car not starting?”

“No.”

“Damn. I need to leave; otherwise, we could have used my car.” Vonda circled her gaze around the backyard. “You know what? Take the Suburban. Nobody is using it tonight. One of the prospects can give you a lift home afterward.”

“Are you sure?” I cast a tentative look at the black Suburban across the yard. It was a club car used by the guys.

“Yeah, why not? The car’s been sitting there the entire day, and the guys are out on a run. I’ll get you the key from the office.”

Vonda returned inside, and I opened the trunk to unload the flowers when my phone rang.

Sean.

My finger hovered over the answer slider. I hadn’t talked to him or read any of his messages after he’d sent me the picture of Valerie. I’d warned her about him, and told her he’d been to her campus, so I knew she would be careful, but my guts still twisted when I thought about him.

Wonder what he’s been up to. No! Be strong now, Becca! Don’t fall for his scheming ways.

I kept staring at my vibrating phone, but then Vonda returned with the key to the Suburban.

To hell with Sean.

It took me another ten minutes to move the flowers from my car to the club car, but at least this one boasted much more space for the elaborate floral arrangements.

Pleased with my accomplishment, I jumped into the Suburban—ooh, nice!—only to hear the unmistakable clatter of the remote key fob sliding down the crack between the driver’s seat and the center console.

Great.

I peeked into the crevice but saw nothing. I slunk a hand down the narrow chink.

Where was that gosh darn key?

With a profanity swirling on my tongue, I stepped out of the car to reach beneath the seat, but I couldn’t get my hand far enough down the narrow space. I pushed the button to adjust the seat position just as the telltale rumble of Harley engines vibrated through the sweltery afternoon air.
